A McGruff House is a temporary haven for children who find themselves in frightening or dangerous situations. The program was started in 1982 in Utah and has grown to include programs in 48 states. A McGruff participant agrees to help children as they go to and from school and play in the neighborhood.

McGruff the Crime Dog®

During the school year, we have the opportunity to visit most of the elementary schools in the Cache County School District and put on McGruff assemblies. Our school resource deputies perform these assemblies and do an excellent job. We are able to reach thousands of children and reinforce the importance of being safe while going to and from school and while playing in their neighborhoods. We send home information with the children to share with their parents along with an invitation to apply to be a McGruff house participant. The program has been a success, and more McGruff signs are showing up in windows of the homes of volunteers who want to help keep children safe. We hope to hold assemblies every year in the elementary schools and keep this program going strong. If anyone would like a McGruff presentation for any group, they can contact the community involvement office at (435) 716-7234. The responsibilities of being a McGruff House are simple, yet they mean a lot to children who may find themselves in a frightening situation.
